Topic - the Greek city-states
Lo1- define polis, acropolis, demós monarchy, oligarchy, aristocracy, tyranny.
Lo2- compare the different models of Gov. used in ancient Greece.
Lo3- compare lifestyles in the two main city-states, Athens + Sparta.
Homework- warring city-states 


City-states and citizens: 

Greek city-states varied in nature and personality but shared some characteristics, like an acropolis ( a temple built upon a mound of earth

New "hoplite" infantries were created; soldiers fought with round shields, spears, and short swords and arranged themselves in a "phalanx' Formation

Most city-states were built on myth and tradition surrounding a common ancestor

[45%] "hoplites" - soldier (Sparta)
              slaves - slave class

Monarchy, Oligarchy, tyranny, democracy.

Early Greeks were ruled by kings, but eventually, many formed oligarchies were a small number of aristocratic where a small number of aristocrat men would form the government

The everyday people, the dēmos eventually gained more power due to the demands for soldiers and oarsmen

In times of war of internal conflict, a city-state might appoint a tyrant to be a dictator for a set time

A democracy where a larger group of citizens had a vote, was most visible in Athens
